There’s a Starbucks right near our office — off Oaklawn & Rawlins — and, being the caffeine junkies we are, we go there all the time. And whoever is going generally asks around the office to see if he or she can pick up a drink for anyone (I hesitate to say “pick up a coffee” since some of us are tea drinkers).
And just this morning, Bryan mentioned that he’d be making a Starbucks run. Normally I’d ask him to pick up an Earl Grey for me, but I still had my mug of tea that I had made earlier in the morning. However, I recalled that Bryan really liked Starbucks’ Pumpkin Scones. As I’m quite a scone aficionado myself, I figured I should give them a try. >
So, I decided to join him on the walk there to peruse their scone offerings. We got there within a few minutes and, since it was just after 9am at that point, it was still stuffed with commuters awaiting their coffee fix. Sadly, all their scones were lumped in a basket labeled something like “Various Scones” which was particularly unhelpful. But, as we waited in line, Bryan went over their scone selection. Among others, they have maple scones and pumpkin scones — but I was here for the pumpkin scones.
We placed our order and then carried our drinks (+scone) back to the office. As I sat down at my desk, I unsheathed the scone from its brown paper bag and realized that it was one of the classically-American wedge-style scones (British scones are often round, like the shape of an American biscuit). It was orange, of course, and featured a glaze drizzled lightly across the top. A voice in the back of my head was telling me “Danger, Will Robinson!”, but I trudged on.
The scone had a reasonably pumpkinish aroma and I tried to remain optimistic. So, I grasped the scone and I gingerly took a bite as I attempted not to get crumbs all over my desk. As I savored the scone, I noticed a distinct pumpkin flavor but it was as if I had encountered a baked good with multiple personality disorder: it was a confection halfway between cake and bread.
Had they added a touch more glaze, it could have crossed the threshold into a tasty pumpkin-cake of some type. Or, if they omitted the glaze and offered accoutrements of (say) apricot preserves and clotted cream, I imagine that it could become a delightful breakfast treat. (For those unaware, clotted cream is a thick, spreadable variant of cream that some say could be described as a cross between butter and ice cream.)
So, the pumpkin scone was not all that I had hoped it would be. But, our Starbucks has many more baked goods among its display case. In particular, their Crumbleberry Somethingorother caught my eye. Granted, a “crumbleberry” is not an actual fruit, but I believe they’re implying that a crumb topping is involved somehow (and I can’t resist a good crumb topping.)
Are they really lame?!
I love the pumkin scones….in fact I go to Starbucks a few tmes a week and during the holiday when they are available I always get one.
I agree…while I still love the pumpkin scone (I picked up my first one EVER this morning)–it wasn’t as good as I expected. I love this time of year though. While it’s dangerous for my health, I am a pumpkin fool and love it when Starbucks brings back my seasonal favorite!

Too bad you dont like the scones. I love them.
I AM ADDICTED TO THE PUMPKIN SCONES AT STARBUCKS. I HAVE TO HAVE THEM AND KOVE THEM BETTER THAN ANY OTHERS I HAVE TRIED. THEIR CONSISTENCY IS PERFECT AND NOT DRY LIKE MOST SCONES.
I EAT THEM ALL YEAR LONG. DON’T EVEN GET COFFEE MOST OF THE TIME JUST THE PUMPKIN SCONES.
Where can I get the recipe?:)
The recipe can be found at http://www.christianfamilyradio.net/recipe-lady/recipes/StarbucksPumpkinScone.htm

I LOVE THE PUMPKIN SCONES! They’re my biggest weakness.
I absolutely CANNOT believe we are still getting comments about this!
You are still getting comments because the search on Google brings up your site. It is the season for looking for such items. Oh, yes, and you have not tasted mine yet. I will be posting to blogspot soon. Right now, need to make a delivery of Pumpkin Scones to my store.
I’m waiting for Ann to post her recipe for pumpkin scones….Ann, are you gonna let us know how to find your recipe???????
your on crack.
their hella good.
I like them. I just had one. They’re not very sweet and they are nice and big. I heard they only have 290 calories… but I find that hard to believe. Oh well, I like them. I do however like the scones that I make best.
I get the recipes from http://www.joyofbaking.com Nice site… unfortunately there does seem to be a direct relationship to an addiction to that site and an expanding waistline.
These scones are AWESOME! I tried one for the first time on a recent trip to Starbucks. I usually go once every month or two and get a mocha only (trying to diet but this is a treat I allow myself on those rare occassions) On this trip though I had to take some medication that required I have food in my stomach. I thought the “pumpkin” would be a healthier choice than some of the other options. But OMG— She warmed it up and I was in HOG HEAVEN! Since I have stopped by at LEAST once a week, getting both a mocha AND a pumpkin scone each time and totally screwing my dieting!
I found this page while searching for a recipe to make them myself!!!
